Position: PRIMARY LAND-BASED/AANISHINAABEOWIN TEACHER
Salary Range: $29.73 -$32.78 (Pending Education & Experience)
Location: Garden River Education Unit
Reports To: Elementary Lead Teacher/Coordinator

Position Summary
The Primary Land-based/Anishinaabemowin Teacher is responsible for the land-based teaching and Anishinaabemowin
components at the primary level. They will ensure that our early primary students are introduced to a variety of land-based
teachings and language opportunities that promotes and fosters a love for the outdoors and the Anishinnabe language. While also
working within the framework of the classroom being outdoors, the teacher promotes and encourages the love of the land and
the love of the language with all students to recognize the connection and relationship to the land, our language, culture,
community connectedness and practices. The teacher ensures that the Primary Elementary Program are complying with the
Education Act, Ministry of Education Policy and Procedure Guidelines and Indigenous Affairs Canada.

Duties
• Search, order, plan and organize the outdoor education program. Continually evaluate and enhance the outdoor education
program to provide the best possible learning opportunities for our students;
• Develop and introduce the age-appropriate, diverse outdoor education curriculum that reflects the culture, language and ways
of knowing and doing of the Anishinaabek in our community;
• Perform student administration functions including daily attendance and addressing any student and/or parental concerns;
• Supporting and networking with Early Years Workers who will be assisting in the planning and implementation of
developmentally appropriate outdoor activities and experiences for our students;
• Maintaining, promoting, and continuously evaluating the high standards and expectations for all students and staff;
• Promoting, planning and delivering a comprehensive program that strives for exceptional performance of all students that
reflect our Anishinaabek ways of doing and knowing, language and culture;
• Ensure students records and emergency procedures are adhered to in the classroom, school and outdoor settings;
• Engage key stakeholders on an as needed basis (Leadership, Education staff, parents, Indigenous Services Canada, HSCDSB,
ADSB) in the development, design, and delivery of an exceptional outdoor education program for primary students;
• Attend, participate and conduct meetings as necessary for program delivery;
• Establishing and maintaining an effective inventory system for the primary land-based and language program;
• Establishing procedures/routines that create and maintain an attractive, organized, functional, healthy, clean, and safe
classroom and learning space outdoors;
• Performing other duties as may be required or assigned;

Qualifications
• Ontario Certified Teacher (OCT) preferred;
• Diploma/ Degree in Anishinaabe Studies, Forestry, Outdoor recreation preferred
• Registered Early Childhood Educator (RECE) an asset;
• Primary Specialist Preferred;
• Required 2-5 years related experience;
• Willingness and stamina to work with primary students
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively as a member of a team;
• Excellent organizational skills, time management skills, interpersonal and communications skills, both oral and written;
• Excellent computer skills (including MS Word, Word Perfect, Excel, Internet, Email, Outlook);
• Must undergo a criminal record and vulnerable sector check prior to employment (At Applicant Expense).
